Donice Barrett

Donice M. (Adams) Barrett, 95, of Sabetha, KS passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 surrounded by family.

Donice was born September 8, 1923 near Centralia, KS the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Fisher) Adams. She attended one room schools in Nemaha County. Donice graduated from Centralia High School in 1941. Then she attended Emporia State Teacher College, and received her teaching certificate. She taught for 4 years.

Donice married Garwood Barrett in Hiawatha on October 2, 1945 and moved to a farm southwest of Sabetha, and resided there for 71 years. After 46 years of marriage he preceded her in death on December 21, 1991.

Her daughter Kathy and husband Jim cared for her the past 2 years to keep her close to family and home. Her hobbies included gardening and flowers, quilting, embroidery and reading. Her primary interests were in her family and particularly in the younger members.

Donice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Garwood; 4 brothers; 3 sisters; and 3 grandchildren.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Linden of Seneca; 3 sister-in-law’s; her children, Sharon Gillitte, David (Ann) Barrett, Gayle Devore, Keith (Audree) Barrett, Steve (Mary Ann) Barrett, Kathy (Jim) Graney, and Gary Barrett, all of Sabetha, KS, and Jeff (Robin) Barrett of Franklin, TN; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 2 great- great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha, KS. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Interment will be made in the Sabetha Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church or Nemaha County Home Health & Hospice, sent in care of Popkess Mortuary, 823 Virginia Street, Sabetha, KS 66534.
