John A. Meier, 86, Atchison, Kansas died Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Mosaic Life Center in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Rev. Jeremy Heppler, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, January 22nd from 12:30 until 1:40 at St. Joseph’s Church with a parish rosary to be recited preceding the Mass at 1:40 P. M. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedict Parish or Maur Hill-Mt. Academy School and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with whom the final care has been entrusted.John was born February 3, 1932 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Joseph and Mary Dorgan Meier. He attended St. Benedict’s Elementary School, graduating from Maur Hill Prep School in 1950. He then attended St. Benedict’s College for two years and later attended Missouri Western College.John served in the United States Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954. He served in Korea and was stationed out of Carson City, Colorado.He and the former Sharon T. Weinmann were united in marriage on June 1, 1957 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.John was employed with Pillsbury Milling Company until it was sold to Midwest Grain Products where John then became employed until his retirement in 1994. Following his retirement he began working for Exchange Bank and Trust Company for nearly twenty years.He was a member of St. Benedict Parish. He enjoyed fishing, especially his YMCA Canadian fishing trips, golfing, bowling and many hours he spent working in his yard gardening. He also enjoyed the time he spent with his coffee group. He was a life member of Fleming-Jackson-Seever Post #6 of the American Legion, life member of V.F. W. Post #1175, and a life member of Sacred Heart council #723 of the Knights of Columbus, several bowling leagues, Pineview Country Club and was a long time and passionate member of the Atchison YMCA where he formerly served as a board member.

Survivors include his wife of sixty one years, Sharon, of the couple’s home in Atchison, a son, Terry (Shelley Ryan) Meier, Lenexa, KS; a sister, Ruthie Elias, Tulsa, OK; and two grandchildren, Holden Meier and Mackenzie Meier.John was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy, Charles and Dorgan and two sisters, Rosemary Elias and Bertha Cogan.
