Linus A. “Lin” Henry

Linus A. “Lin” Henry, 102, of Azle, Texas, formerly of Sabetha, Kansas, died on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his home.

Lin was born on September 22, 1920 to Anthony T. and Rose Vondenkamp Henry on a farm southeast of Seneca, Kansas, where he was raised with his siblings. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School where he graduated from the 8th grade. He spent the next few years working as a field hand several places in Minnesota. He then worked in Baltimore for the Frye Aircraft Company as a sheet metal worker. On February 6, 1943, Lin married Eleanor A. “Gussie” Olberding at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived on a farm north of Sabetha and a farm south of Seneca before Lin was inducted into the U.S. Army on January 30, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was assigned to the Army-Air Force as a Medical Corps 4117th AAF Base Unit Squadron E at Robins Field, Georgia. The couple lived on Army bases until July 1946 when he was discharged as a corporal.

After his years of service, Lin and Gussie then went to work for work for Wilber Kiem on a farm south of Sabetha, Kansas. Lin then took a job with Keithy Plumbing. In 1954 they purchased the plumbing business, and Gussie was the office manager for the 53 years they owned and operated the business.

Lin was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha, the Seneca Knights of Columbus Council 1769 and the Earle W. Taylor Post 21 of the American Legion in Seneca, and a life member of the Sabetha Lions Club with 60 years perfect attendance. He was a long-time member and Fire Chief of the Sabetha Volunteer Fire Department.

After he retired from plumbing, he and Gussie traveled the US in their travel trailer. Mostly spending the summers in the Pacific NW and the winters in the south; and always being in Kansas in the spring and fall months. They were very proud of making it to 48 states. Lin took time to fish and play golf anytime he could.

Lin was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Rose; his brothers, Bill Henry on August 2, 2023, Paul Henry on February 1, 2023, Eugene Henry on May 9, 2019; and sisters, Leta Tangeman on August 16, 2003 and Dorothy Olberding on August 29, 2018.

He is survived by his son, Jerry Henry of Redmond, Washington; and a daughter, Janis Allen of Azle, Texas; one sister, Joan Klier of Ocala, Florida; six grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A rosary at 7 P.M. will be on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 11, 2023 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca. His children will place the pall on his casket. The lector will be Paula Winkler; and Karen Brinker the communion distributor.

The Pallbearers are Doug Henry, Jona Thornal, Brian Wickman, Larry Olberding, Rick Tangman and Chuck Henry. The burial will be in the church cemetery.

Full military honors will be provided by the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21. A flag line will be provided by the American Legion Riders Post #21.

Memorials may be left to the Sts. Peter and Paul School, sent in care of the family.
