Orville Dean Calhoon, Sr.

Lawrence, formerly of Brown Co area , KS

Orville Dean Calhoon Sr. of Lawrence, Kansas and formerly of the Brown County area, passed away at Atchison Medical Lodge on Sunday August 20th at the age of 87. He was surrounded by family and passed away peacefully after leaving a wonderful lifetime of love and memories with his family and friends.

He was born on July 13th, 1936 to Mildred Christie and Eugene Calhoon. Orville was raised in Muscotah, and attended schools in Muscotah and Effingham.

Following school, Orville married Patricia Vega and to this marriage seven children were born. Orville later divorced after over 30 years of marriage. He then married Charlene Merry and they resided in Lawrence for the last 30 plus years and were recently divorced. Orville worked at Rockwell in Atchison, was a mechanic for many years, drove a school bus for U.S.D. 430, managed a Napa Auto Parts Store in Horton and Falls City Auto Supply in Hiawatha for many years prior to his retirement.

His hobbies included working on small engines, fixing up garden tractors, and attending many garden -tractor shows in Kansas and Missouri with his family. Orville also had a country western band named Honky Tonk Country and enjoyed playing the guitar for many years.

Orville is survived by a step-sister Charlotte Jacobsen of Towanda, Ks, 4 sons: Ronnie Calhoon of Hiawatha, John (Brenda) Calhoon of Atchison, Orville Jr. (Melinda) Calhoon of Eudora, Kevin Calhoon of Atchison, and 1 daughter, Patty Lynn Rios of Lawrence, grandchildren, Corey Lowe of St. Joseph, Shane Oldaker of St. Joseph, Cassie Calhoon of Kansas City, Rachel (Matt) Campbell of Eudora, Austin Calhoon of Lawrence, Stefanie (Clayton) Bevitt of Auburn, Kelle (Ryan) Meininger of Hiawatha, Becca (Andy) Sivils of Hiawatha, Harley Calhoon of Meriden, Christy ( Tony ) Mastro of Eudora, Ashley (Mike) Trembly of Topeka, Daris Calhoon of Atchison, Collin Calhoon of Atchison, and Carlee (Wyatt) Funk of Atchison, Courtney (Dr. Mitch) Hervert of Lincoln Ne., Cody Calhoon of Kansas City, Chelsea (Bruce) Carter of Kansas City, Callie Rose Rios of Kansas City, and Caitlyn Rios of Lawrence, and a son in law, Jeff Lockhart of Lawrence, numerous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that he cared for deeply, along with his cat “Lucky.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Hudson and Eugene Calhoon, a sister Betty McFeeters, 2 daughters, Candy Oldaker, and Sandra Lockhart, and grandson Matthew Calhoon.

Orville will lie in state at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton after 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 23rd,2023. Visitation will be held that evening from 6:00-7:30 pm. The funeral service will be held Thursday morning August 24th ,2023 at 10:00 am at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary. Burial will follow at the Monrovia Cemetery near Effingham, Ks.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Atchison Amberwell Hospital and Atchison Medical Lodge for care provided to Orville as they prepared him to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
