Gerald (Jerry) Eugene Smith, 85, of Cowgill, MO is wearing his starry crown in heaven. The good Lord showed him the way on Friday, October 6th, 2023.

Jerry was born May 29th, 1938 at Horton, KS to James “Smitty” and Inga (Soyland) Smith. He grew up in rural Everest Kansas. Jerry Graduated from Pleasant Ridge Grade School (Everest, KS) and Everest High School. He continued his education, and love of playing basketball, at Highland Community College and Ottawa University. Jerry served in the Kansas Army National Guard and served as a police officer for 30 years at the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. After his retirement, he served as security at various hospitals in the Kansas City North area.

On the first day of spring in 1964 (March 21st), Jerry was united in marriage to Carol Sue Murray. Their love for one another never went unnoticed. The two enjoyed many lunch dates together, that usually ended in pie, and numerous trips to the NRHA finals in Oklahoma. Jerry never knew a stranger. He spent many hours visiting about his love of horses, sports, and the good old days. He had a beautiful voice and shared it with his family and his church family.

His love of horses began in his youth with his horse Buck. He rode many horses across the Midwest: Shiner, Burny, Red Ant, Nina, Dub, and Money Man are just a few to name. Jerry was active in his church, Polo Line Riders saddle club, and other organizations that were dear to his heart. He enjoyed teaching people about horses and coaching his sons in basketball. Jerry took great pride in his sons, grandchildren, and close family members. He loved to share about their achievements with others.

Survivors include his wife Carol of the home and two sons: Steffen (and wife Kim) Smith of Liberty, and Dallas (and wife Brenda) Smith of Kearney. He leaves behind Granddaughter Hollie (and husband Bobby) Kosorog and their son Abraham. Grandsons Brandon Herring, Hunter Smith, and granddaughter Savannah Smith. A sister Brenda “Sis” Hoobler, a brother David Smith. He is proceeded in death by his parents, a sister Debra Clement, a brother Donald Smith, and a brother-in-law Richard “Dick” Hoobler. In addition to his immediate family, Jerry “Bub” leaves behind a close extended family and many friends.

During his time here, Jerry found a way into everyone- heart and his legacy will not be short lived.
