Sharon Joy Hollander

Sharon Joy Hollander, 86, Topeka, KS, passed away at the Legend at Capital Ridge on November 24, 2023 in Topeka, KS.

Sharon was born October 12, 1937 in Alva, Oklahoma, the son of Hubert B. “Tobe” and Mary Grace (Cummins) May. Sharon moved with her family to Kansas at age six, where she attended Denison Elementary and High School through the 11th grade. She returned to school later in life and proudly received her GED.

Sharon married Robert Lux and to this union they shared two daughters, Debra and Beckie, and two sons Mickie and Robert. They later divorced.

In 1979, Sharon was united in marriage to Max LeRoy Hollander, bringing two more daughters, Linda and Brenda, to a blended family.

Sharon spent her career as an amazing seamstress. She worked as a sewing machine operator at the Slimaker Dress Factory in Holton for 22 years. She created her own patterns from swim suits to winter coats and made the majority of the clothing for herself and her daughters. She finished up her seamstress career sewing leather coats for Thistles West in Cummins, KS for 5 years. These coats were made for many celebrities including Alan Jackson. Sharon was very talented and creative from painting, sewing, quilting, ceramics, and jewelry making. She loved working in her yard and loved yard art. She was a wonderful cook who rarely used recipes. She and Max hosted fish fries and “wiener roasts” with family and friends. Sharon enjoyed her annual trips to Iowa- Sidney Rodeo with Max.

Sharon was a member of the Larkinburg Church and belonged to the Larkinburg Ladies Aid.

Sharon will be missed as both a mother and grandmother. Thank you for the memories.

Survivors include 4 daughters; Debra Barrow (Dan) of Denison, KS, Beckie Lux (Tyrone) of Topeka, KS, Linda Hollander (Jim) of Gentry, AR and Brenda Yingst of Rogers, AR; 1 son, Robert Lux (Lisa) of Denison, KS. Sister, Doreen Huston of San Antonio, TX; 6 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Max Hollander; her infant son, Mickie; her parents, Tobe & Grace May, and her brother, Darrel May.

Graveside Service will be ­­­­­­­­­­­­­11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the Larkinburg Cemetery, Larkinburg, KS. Sharon will lie-in-state Monday from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, KS.
