Ruth Ellen Braun Miller, age 83, of Atchison, passed away late Thursday evening, March 6, 2025, at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, MO.
The mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church, Good Intent, with interment in St. Louis Church Cemetery. The rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at St. Louis Church with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Louis Church or American Heart Association in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.
Ruth was born in Atchison on September 19, 1941, the daughter of Victor H. Braun and Ida W. (Evans) Braun. She attended Saint Joseph's grade school, and graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in 1959. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
She married Melvin C. Miller at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Atchison, on August 24, 1963. They were married just days short of 58 years until his passing on August 13, 2021. To this union, 3 sons and one daughter were born. Before building their own home nearby, they lived in the church rectory of St. Louis Church for 20 years, and Ruth served as a member and officer on the church Altar Society. In her younger years, she also taught CCD.
Ruth was a homemaker and enjoyed raising their 4 children. She always had a big garden, did lots of canning and freezing, and enjoyed passing these skills on to her children and grandchildren. She attended countless sporting events and enjoyed reading, sewing, and tending to her flower garden. Her greatest joy in life, was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and teaching most of them cooking and sewing skills.
Ruth is survived by her children, Scott (Lisa) Miller, Parkville, MO; Paul (Becky) Miller, Cummings, KS; Mark (Brenda) Miller, Nortonville, KS; and Kelli (Brad) Nichols, Smithville, MO; nine grandchildren, Logan Miller, Austen (Allison) Miller, Kaitlyn (Grant) Cason, Garrett Miller, Mike (Trina) Miller, Patrick (Jenna) Miller, Sarah Miller, Abby Nichols, and Aubrey Nichols; 5 great-grandchildren, Zoey and Killian Miller, Thomas Cason, Michael Miller, Jr., and Amelia Miller as well as several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Rita (Jim) Wells, Diamond City, AR.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 58 years, Melvin Miller, her parents, Victor and Ida Braun, and two brothers, Bernard Braun, Richard Braun, and his wife, Jackie Braun.
