Mercer Funeral Home in Holton
Holton, KS

Harold Eldon Nusser, 99, of Holton, Kansas, went home to the Lord on June 18, 2025, reuniting with his two daughters, Jan and Joyce.

Harold was born to Albert and Reno (Cramer) Nusser on May 8, 1926, in Plevna, Kansas. He grew up with his five siblings in Manter, Kansas, where he loved playing baseball and following his favorite team, the Cleveland Indians. As a teenager, his family moved to Arkansas, and in August 1944, Harold was drafted into service. He was sent to Le Havre, France, in April 1945 to prepare for battle in Germany. On his 19th birthday, he traveled by troop train to the frontlines. In his own words, he recalled: "We didn't have anything to sit on unless it was the bags we carried. Here we thought we were going to be in the thick of things near Bonn, Germany, and we did not have one weapon. With us were two 2nd Lieutenants from the Air Force, and each of them carried a carbine and probably never fired one. Needless to say, we were a little uncomfortable."

Upon arriving in Germany, they received word that the war had ended. Harold remained in Bonn as an Occupation Guard and was later chosen to serve in Brussels, Belgium, as part of the Honor Guard for the Potsdam Conference, where

President Truman and General Eisenhower were present.

In 1946, Harold met the love of his life, Mildred Wedel, who would become his wife of 76 years. They settled in Garden City, Kansas, where Harold worked as an engineer for the State of Kansas. To this union, three daughters were born: Kathy Dyer (Bill) of Mayetta, Janice Meyers (David) and Joyce Lambert (Brad), both now deceased.

In 1967, Harold became one of the founding elders of Bible Christian Church in Garden City. He was the first in his family to give his life to Christ, and through his faith, he began a legacy of believers that continues to this day. In 1970, feeling called to full-time ministry, he and his family moved to Oklahoma so he could attend Midwest Christian College. While in school, he began his ministry in Jones, Oklahoma. He graduated from Midwest Christian College in 1975 and went on to serve in Vici, Oklahoma. In 1979, Harold and Mildred joined the Cookson Hills Christian Ministry family, beginning 37 years of service. They started as house parents in Siloam Springs, AR, caring for unwed mothers. Over the years, they took on many roles, becoming "adopted grandparents" to many. They traveled to churches to represent Cookson Hills Ministries, and Harold also founded Mission In Between Missions, making dozens of trips to Mexico to build homes and churches. He also contributed to an inner-city mission in Memphis.

Harold served faithfully as a church elder until he decided, at age 90, that it was time to retire. He and Mildred moved back to Kansas to be closer to their daughter, Kathy, and become members of the Circleville Christian Church. Harold is survived by his loving wife, Mildred; one daughter, Kathy Dyer (Bill); son in law, David Myers and one sister, Doris Messenger. He was a proud grandfather of five: Brent Meyers (Brandy), Lori Self (Larry), Jamie Morphew (Kevin), Joel Dyer (Kari), and Kayla Hubbard (Tywon). He was blessed with 15 great-grandchildren; Zane (Lindsey), Aiden, Josh, Kale (Emily), Jenson, Isaac, Aidan, Jace, Bodie, Eli, Harrison, Ty, Raden, Jalen, and Hope, and lived to meet his great-great-grandson, Fritz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Joyce and Jan; two sisters, Frances and Beverly; and two brothers, Gerald and Dale.

Harold loved his family fiercely. In return, he was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and was deeply admired. He will be remembered for being a devoted KU fan, and always having a baseball game on the TV, and sharing many words of wisdom. His great-grandsons often requested "Grampy's" famous homemade chocolate chip cookies. Most of all, Harold had an unwavering faith in God.

To his family, a golden heart has stopped beating, but his legacy will live on in all who loved him. We celebrate Harold's life, knowing he was called to his heavenly reward with the words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Celebration of Life with Military Honors will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at Circleville Christian Church. Memorials may be made to the Circleville Christian Church or Cookson Hills Christian School c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
