Obituaries Announcements
Edna Mae Futscher age 88 passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Nov 7 at the Villa St Francis nursing facility in Olathe, KS where she was a recent resident.
She was born in the family home in Hiawatha in 1937 to Guy and Mabel Corbet. The youngest of nine children and all preceding her in death were Vern, Dallas, Dale, Murl, Arland (Bud), Kenny, Norman (Dink), and Donna Thonen (Lawrence).
Edna graduated from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1955. Shortly after, she married Neil Futscher in 1956 following his return home from serving in the US Navy. In 1961 they moved to Sylmar, CA then moved back to Hiawatha after the severe 1971 earthquake in Sylmar.
Edna liked to stay busy and active and be around people leading her to hold many job titles while living in Hiawatha. These included Chamber of Commerce Secretary, bookkeeper at Farm and Home and KNZA radio station, manager of the country club and Hiawatha Inn Restaurant. Whether you worked with her or for her or were a customer, her personality and people skills made any establishment a better place to be. Following the death of her husband Neil in 1988 a voice in her head told her she needed to move to Scottsdale, AZ so she did, not knowing anyone down there. With her moxie and work ethic she carved out a life for herself, making many friends over the years while living there.
Of all the various and interesting jobs Edna held in her lifetime, her last was the most rewarding as the Executive Secretary for the violent crimes unit of the Scottsdale Police Department from which she retired in 2006. That same year she moved to Sun City, AZ, becoming fast friends to the neighborhood and volunteering with the Sun City Posse and local food bank. Being a natural conversationalist, Edna didn't know a stranger and made friends quickly. She thoroughly enjoyed the fun and fellowship she had playing bingo at the Elks and card games with friends.
Surviving family members include three daughters Denise Catron (Tim), Teresa Marks, Janelle Futscher, son Corey Futscher (Susan), grandchildren Jeremy Milne, Nicole Walker (Winston), Levi Milne (Karina), Erin Milne (Stuart), Laura Milne (Mathew), Anna Neal, Byran Marks, Hannah Konyalioglu (Kurt), Brenden Cooper, Leah Nagely (Rob), and fourteen great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 11am on Wednesday Nov 12, 2025, at the Chapel Oaks funeral home with Pastor Tony French officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 10am. Burial will take place at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Catholic Community Health and Hospice - Villa St Francis or the Brown County Humane Society in care of the funeral home, 124 S Seventh St Hiawatha, KS 66434.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday. www.chapeloaksfuneralhome.com
