Susan McElroy
Hiawatha, KS
Susie McElroy, 57, of Hiawatha, died Friday evening, February 10, 2012, surrounded by her family and friends at the Pines South, in Hiawatha, after a nineteen month battle with cancer. Susie was born in Junction City, KS, August 2, 1954, one of four children of Dr. John and Joyce Davis Meyer. She grew up in Chapman where she attended school, later graduating high school with the class of 1972. Susie graduated from Kansas State University in 1976 with a bachelor degree in Early Childhood. She worked as a para-educator for USD #415 at Hiawatha Elementary School for 19 years. Susie was also the manager of the Hiawatha Aquatic Park for 15 years. Growing up, Susie was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Chapman prior to Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Concordia. She was a longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha; and the Altar Society of the Church. Susie was an avid sports fan, attending all her children’s sporting events, as well as, many Kansas State games. She was married to Norval McElroy, August 20, 1977 at St. Michael Church in Chapman. They lived in Concordia for 11 years before moving to Hiawatha to make their home in 1988. He survives. Also surviving are her father Dr. John Meyer II, of Chapman; two daughters: Megan (Brett) Clark of Manhattan, Kristen McElroy, also of Manhattan; two sons: Michael (Megan) McElroy of Wichita, Matthew (Jennifer) McElroy of Shawnee; two brothers: Dr. John (Debbe) Meyer III of W Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Mark (Lauren) Meyer of Lenexa; a sister Sally Shields of Manhattan; four grandchildren: Mayci Clark, Brodee Clark, Delayni Clark, and Luke McElroy. Susie was preceded in death by her mother. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, with Father Sylvester D’Sousa as the celebrant. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, near Chapman. The Londeen Funeral Chapel in Chapman is in charge Chapman arrangements. Friends may call Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after noon Monday till 4 p.m. Tuesday. A parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Ann Church, followed by the family visiting with friends until 8:30 that evening. In lieu of flowers, the Susie McElroy Scholarship Fund at Hiawatha High School has been established and may be left in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
