Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha
rural Hiawatha, KS

Wesley Charles Duncan, 59, of rural Hiawatha, died Saturday morning, May 3, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

Wes was born September 7, 1954, at Hiawatha, the son of Wesley and Helen Stillman Duncan and was a lifelong resident of Hiawatha, where he grew up, attended Hiawatha schools, graduating with the class of 1972. He attended Highland College a short time before going to work for KDOT Horton district. Wes retired in July 2011 as supervisor in highway maintenance, after over 35 years of service.

Wes enjoyed life. He enjoyed anything to do out of doors, was an avid at fishing and deer hunting. He never met a stranger and always put other people concerns or problems, ahead of his own. He was very talented at wood working, remodeling a home in Hiawatha, before purchasing his dream: a small acreage and building a home south of town, most of which he did the work himself. Being a grandpa was most important to him late in life.

Survivors include his wife Debbie Pennell-Duncan of the home; a son Drew Duncan of Topeka; two daughters: Lindsay Williams of St. Joseph, Missouri, Emily O’Neil of Leavenworth; a brother Howie Duncan of Sabetha; five grandchildren: Kamea, Tatum, Keon, Xander, and Jeremiah.

A Celebration of Wes’ life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at the Fisher Center in Hiawatha.

The family will meet with friends from 10 until 11 at the Fisher Center. To continue the celebration, a meal will follow with sharing stories with family and friends.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the grandchildren scholarship fund and may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.
