Mildred B. Kelly, 93, Effingham, Kansas, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at Midland Care in Valley Falls, Kansas.

Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, May 12, 2014, at St. Ann’s Church in Effingham, Kansas, at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Ann’s Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, May 11th at 4:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, visitation with the family will follow until 6:00 P.M. Mildred was born March 13, 1921, in Kelly, Kansas, the daughter of Clement L. and Catherine Hoefler Haverkamp. She attended District 56 School in Nemaha County and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1939. Following graduation she attended Business College in Lawrence, Kansas.

She and Paul Kelly were united in marriage on April 22, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Kelly preceded her in death on May 26, 2007.

Mildred was employed with Kennedy Plumbing and Electric Co. in Lawrence, Kansas and St. Benedict’s College, prior to marriage to Paul. She was a dedicated wife, mother and friend.

She was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Effingham, KS, and the St. Ann’s Altar Society. Mildred was very active in many groups including the Farmerette Unit FCE, 48-ers Club and Community Club. Mildred volunteered for Atchison Hospice. She was a charter member of Kansas AgriWomen and American AgriWomen and held various offices in these organizations. She was a clothing leader for Prairie View 4-H Club for 37 years and judged 4-H projects in surrounding counties. For all of this work she was awarded the “Friends of 4-H” and “C.E. Sell” Award. Mildred was an “Ex-Officio” member of the agriculture committee of the Atchison Chamber of Commerce for ten years. She was appointed by Senator Bob Dole to serve on the National Energy Advisory Committee 1977-1978. She received the Kansas Citizenship Award from Governor John W. Carlin.   

Survivors include two sons, James P. (Diane) Kelly, Overland Park, KS, Michael C. (Denise) Kelly Effingham, KS, two daughters, Janet Sandridge, Friendswood, TX, Colleen (Gary) Mantey, Mission Viejo, CA, three sisters, Lucy Weber, Lee’s Summit, MO, Evelyn Jamvold, Daphne, AL, Gladys Carr, Topeka, KS, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clement & Catherine Haverkamp, three sisters, Betty Lou Haverkamp, Alice Ann Haverkamp, Mary Lemke, two brothers, Albert Haverkamp. Verniss J. Haverkamp and two infant sons, Timothy Kelly and Edward Kelly.
