John M. Koger

John M. Koger, 93 of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Holton, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Brewster Place in Topeka.

John was born December 4, 1920 in Cheney, Kansas, the son of Dr. Robert G. and Ermon Sloan Koger. He graduated from Cheney High School in 1938 and received his Business Administration Degree from Kansas State University in 1943. While at KSU, John belonged to Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

John served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked as a sales engineer for Armco Steel Corporation for 6 years. He served as assistant manager for the Kansas Contractors Association for 5 years and was a partner in Hussey Insurance Agency in Topeka for 5 years. He founded Koger Agency Inc. in 1972 and Owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 1985.

John was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holton and was currently a member of the First Baptist Church in Topeka. He served on the Denison State Bank Board of Directors for 23 years and for 14 years on the Executive Board of the KSU Foundation, serving as president of the foundation in 1980. John was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, Arab Temple (serving as Potentate in 1965) and Topeka Court No. 125. He also served as director of AGC of Kansas and was selected to serve on the Brewster Place Foundation in 2009.

John was married to Thurza May Ellis on September 26, 1943 in Topeka, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 15, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Margaret Dudley and Robert, Paul and Kendrick Koger. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Keck (Lynn) of Auburn, Kansas; his sons, John Koger, Jr. (Cindy) and Paul Koger (Jane) both of Topeka, Chris Koger (Carolyn) of Holton and David Koger of Ft. Worth, TX; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home.
