Betty E. Strathman, 79, Atchison, Kansas died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Atchison Medicalodge.


Funeral services Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating.  Interment will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, May 27th from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Betty Strathman Memorial Fund in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be left at www.arensbergpruett.com.


Betty was born February 8, 1935 in Atchison, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Hazel Canfield Johnson.  She attended Atchison Public Schools and Atchison High School.
She and Carl J. Strathman were united in marriage on April 9, 1970 at First Christian Church.  Mr. Strathman preceded her in death on May 20, 2008.


Betty was formerly employed at Hamm’s Café, The Suzy Q Grill, Dietzell Turkey Farm and Atchison Coal Company.   Betty served as a supervisor of housekeeping at Atchison Medicalodge for seventeen years until her retirement.  Following retirement she assisted her husband as caretaker of the Atchison County Lake, Horton, Kansas.


She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed her pet birds and dogs and spending time with her grandchildren.


Survivors include two sons, Thomas C. Strathman, Atchison, KS, William (Marian) Hartsock, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Hazel Hartsock, Wichita, KS, Karen Keil, Kansas City, MO, a brother, James Johnson, Atchison, KS, two sisters, Winnie Lear, Central City, KY, Glennie Ruth Morace, Wichita, KS, 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.


Betty was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Eugene and Henry Paul Hartsock, a grandson, Matthew Horacek, two sisters, Thelma Camillie, Alice Girardo and a brother, Merle “Bud” Johnson.
