James Torrez, 93, of Hiawatha, KS died Thursday morning, June 12, 2014, at Tri County Manor in Horton, KS.
James was born January 1, 1921 in Hiawatha, KS,  the son of John and Conchita Hernandez Torrez.  James’s family immigrated from Mexico to Hiawatha and made it their home prior to him being born. He in turn made Hiawatha  his home until his health began to fail and then he moved to Tri County Manor in Horton.
He was married to Betty Wolf in Troy, KS in 1946.  They later divorced.  She preceded him in death March 9, 2014.
James worked for the City of Hiawatha 36 years in the Maintenance Dept.  He retired in 1985.  He enjoyed working on bicycles and lawn mowers for people.  More times than not he would give away the bicycles that he worked on to children in the community.
He married Connie Farmeyer June 5, 1979 in Hiawatha, KS.  She resides at Tri County Manor in Horton.
Other survivors include sons, Joseph (Janet) Torrez of Omaha, NE, William Torrez of Findlay, OH, and Rick Torrez of Hiawatha, daughters, Mona Redmon of Horton, KS, and Linda (Duane) Overfield of  Topeka, KS,  13 grandchildren, numerous great and great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Chinito Torrez, daughter, Ruth Hayes, and an infant sister, Mary Torrez.
Memorial Services are planned for 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.  Family inurnment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested in to Tri County Manor and may be sent to Chapel Oaks Funeral Home 124 S 7th St  Hiawatha, KS  66434.
