Robert (Bob) Milward Idol

Robert (Bob) Milward Idol, 87, of Robinson died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.

He was born to the late James Milward and Dorothy Keohane Idol, October 25, 1926, in St. Joseph MO.

Bob graduated from Robinson High School in 1944 and attended the University of Kansas where he was a member of the KU Marching Band and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. On October 12, 1958 he married Marjorie Meyer of Hiawatha, Kansas. She survives.

Bob served two years during WWII as a member of the Armed Forces in Manila, Philippines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal. Later he began his employment at the Bank of Robinson serving in various positions, eventually becoming President and Chairman of the Board. He was in banking for over 50 years.  In 1990, the bank and community proudly celebrated the 100th anniversary of the fourth generation family-owned bank.

As a boy, Bob participated in Boy Scouts and was recognized as member of the Honor Camping Tribe of Mic-O-Say in the Pony Express Council. Bob was active in the Robinson Fire Department.  He was Past Commander of the Hedrick Moll American Legion Post #148.  He was active in the Masonic Lodge and the Abdallah Shrine. Bob served on the City Council and as mayor of the City of Robinson. He was a charter member of the Robinson Lion’s Club where  he  was responsible for starting the Robinson Melodrama, serving as director for over 25 years and organizing the Firehouse Five Band. Bob was also a Past President of the Hiawatha Community Hospital Board. 

Bob’s family and his Christian faith were a very significant part of Bob’s life. He was an active member of the Robinson United Methodist Church, serving as Trustee, Chairman of the Administrative Board and Choir Director. Also very important to Bob was he playing taps for military graveside services starting when he was in the eighth grade until he was 80.

Bob loved music, sports and traveling. Other interests included antiquing, coin collecting, golf, history and genealogy.

Bob is survived by two daughters: Ann Idol Reece (Jerry) of Webb City, Missouri and Sara Idol Campbell of Robinson, Kansas. Bob is also survived by two grandchildren: Madison Scott Idol Campbell and Sydney Jane Campbell of Robinson.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June18th, 2014 from 6 pm - 8pm., at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.  A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday June 19th, 2014 at the Robinson United Methodist Church, with Pastors Charlie Neill and Paul Waters officiating.  Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Robinson with military honors. Memorial contributions are suggested to Robinson Development Corporation, Robinson Boy Scouts, or Brown County Veterans Honor Guard and may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha, Kansas 66434.
