Milton R. “Moose” Young, 64, Valley Falls, surrounded by his family,passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at his home.

He was born May 24, 1950, at Hays, the son of Vivian Francis and Millie Hunter Young. He graduated from Bogue, KS, High School in 1969, Garden City Community College in 1971, Fort Hays State University in 1974, and Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in 1978.

Moose worked at Stormont-Vail Hospital as a RN in the ICU until 1993. He was an active member of the District 11 Rescue Squad in Valley Falls for many, many years.

In high school Moose attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a merit badge counselor for Boy Scout Troops in Meriden and Valley Falls.

Moose was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Valley Falls.

He loved to share his thoughts and knowledge with anyone who would lend him their ear. He was very proud of his family history and worked extensively on researching his ancestry. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, creative cooking, and walks with his loyal dogs, Blue and Jazzy.

He married Katherine Irene Lederer on May 26, 1974, at Abilene. She survives. He is also survived by his children, Betsy (Willie) Schmelze, Valley Falls; Scott Young, Meriden; Christopher Young, Larned; Angie Young, Valley Falls; a brother, Leroy Young, Lawrence; and five grandchildren, Lainey and Sam Schmelze; and Audrey, Mallory, and Jenner Young. Moose was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Service will be at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Valley Falls. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Valley Falls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Milton Young Memorial Fund c/o Mercer Funeral Home, PO Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
