Devon Massengale (Elkhorn) and Will Scott (Defuniak Springs, Fla.) were recently announced as Peru State College's (PSC) March Athletes of the Month by Athletic Director Steve Schneider.
Both Massengale and Scott are the leading pitchers on their respective teams and both were named Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Pitchers of the Week during March.
Massengale had earned the recognition for her record-tying performance against Haskell Indian Nations University. Massengale had tied a Bobcat single-game record of 12 strikeouts which put her into the PSC record books along with former standout Melanie Tramp who set the record in 1999 against Midland Lutheran. Later in the month, Massengale had another 12 K performance Viterbo College in the Tucson Invitational Games.
Currently, Massengale is 7-4 and leads PSC with a 2.76 ERA and has thrown 68 strikeouts.
In the HAAC, Massengale is ranked in the following categories: tied for sixth for wins (7); seventh in total strikeouts (68); eighth in opponents' batting average (.227); eighth in batters struck out per game (8.31); eighth in hits allowed per game (7.94); 12th in ERA (2.76); 12th in innings pitched per game (4.91); 14th in hits allowed (65); and 14th in earned runs allowed (29).
Scott earned his HAAC honors when he threw a one-hit shutout over Mayville State in the Metrodome Classic. In the win, Scott struck out a career-high 11 Mayville batters.
Presently, Scott is 4-3 on the season and has the team's best ERA at 3.45 and has the most strikeouts with 41.
“Devon and Will are deserving of the recognition for March,” said Schneider. “They have worked hard and had some decent performances in the month while helping their teams to several victories.”
