(KAIR) -- Drivers on U.S. Hwy 59 and Route 45 in Buchanan County will see significant improvements to the roadways this construction season.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says Herzog Contracting Corporation of St. Joseph has been awarded a $2.4 million contract to improve a 15 mile portion of roadway from just north of U.S. Hwy 59 in Buchanan County south on Route 45 through Weston to just south of Route 273 in Platte County.
The project will begin Monday, July 23 (weather permitting) when repairs will begin to the pavement and to shoulder drop offs that were caused during last year's flooding.
Following repairs, Herzog will widen shoulders to two feet from Route H (Weston) south to Route 273 (approximately 2.8 miles).
Repairs are expected to take approximately two weeks.
Herzog will then complete the project by adding two lifts of asphalt over the entire project length, which should take approximately three weeks The 15 mile section will also receive new guardrail, rumble stripes and striping.
Included in this project are the resigning and design changes at the junction of U.S. Hwy 59 and Route 45 to convert it to a three-way stop.
Pilot cars and/or flaggers may be used at any time throughout the project.
