High Feed Prices Expected for Nebraska Ranchers
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - After this year's prolonged drought, Nebraska ranchers should plan on high feed costs in 2013.
Experts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln say it will be nearly impossible for soil moisture in the state to be recharged by next spring, and there will be little hay left after this winter.
UNL extension specialist Bruce Anderson says drought is hard to predict, but no one should be surprised by limited feed availability next year.
So Anderson says ranchers should look at whether they can afford to keep doing what they have been to feed their cattle if it remains dry.
He says ranchers might consider planting annual forages or renting cornstalks for winter grazing.
