( KNZA )-Brown County will take part in a Hazardous Materials Commodity Flow Study.
County commissioners Monday approved an agreement with Coffey County, which is acting as the fiscal agent and project coordinator for the study involving 12 counties. Besides Brown County, taking part locally are Atchison, Doniphan, Jackson and Nemaha Counties.
The study is designed to assess the volume and nature of hazardous materials that enter, exit and are transferred within the county through all transportation modes—including highway, pipeline and rail.
Coffey County has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the Kansas Division of Emergency Management to help fund the study.
Linck said Brown County share of the grant is $35,000. He said the grant requires a 20 percent match, which can be in the form of in-kind services.
A contractor will conduct the study, which must be completed by July 1st.
In other business, commissioners gave County Appraiser Paula Jones approval to purchase a new pickup from Hiawatha Ford.
The 2012 Ford F-150 4 X 4 Supercab XLT will cost $25,700 after the trade-in of a 1996 Ford Ranger and government discount.
And commissioners approved a proposal from engineer Tom Bennett with BG Consultants of Manhattan for the inspection of eight fracture critical bridges in the county for a maximum fee of $4,000.
