(KNZA)--Authorities are searching for a person of interest, described as armed and dangerous, wanted in connection with a shooting death in Mayetta.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office rushed to the scene of the shooting shortly after 10:30 Thursday night at 206 James Street.
Sheriff Tim Morse says 29-year-old Kevin Stanley of Mayetta was pronounced dead at the scene.
An alert was issued Friday morning for 22-year-old Lloyd A. Wabaunsee of Mayetta, who Morse described as a person of interest in the case.
He is described as a Native American standing 5 foot 9 and weighing 180 pounds.
Authorities say Wabaunsee is believed to be armed with an automatic weapon, and is described as extremely dangerous.
It's believed he may be driving a late 90's or early 2000's dark blue or black Chevy pickup truck with chrome bed rails.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact your local law enforcement agency or the Jackson County Sheriff's office at 364-2251.
Meanwhile, Royal Valley schools superintendent John Rundle said the district’s schools were on lockdown Friday as a precautionary measure to ensure students’ safety because of the shooting death. Basketball games Friday that were to be hosted by Royal Valley, which was scheduled to play Sabetha, were postponed indefinitely.
In a news release sent to local media, Rundle said the only visitors allowed entry into the schools Friday presented themselves at the front door were let in by school staff after being identified.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation joined Jackson County authorities Friday in the investigation.
