(KTNC) - Southeast Nebraska Community Action Partnership has received a donation through a newly created program in Nebraska that will help to feed needy families in the area.
The Hunters Helping the Hungry program was created last April when the Legislature passed LB 928.
The program, funded by donations, provides venison to Nebraskans. The Game and Parks Commission accepts cash donations for the program and uses those funds to pay selected meat lockers to process deer donated by hunters into ground venison. The Game and Parks Commission makes arrangements with nonprofit organizations and processors for the meat to be picked up and distributed.
Through the Hunters Helping the Hungry program, SENCA received 350 pounds of processed deer meat from Dennis Schaardt of Den’s Country Meats in Table Rock. The 175 packages are being distributed to families in SENCA’s service area, including Richardson, Pawnee, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, and Cass Counties.
The Game and Parks Commission received enough cash donations this year to provide hunters the opportunity to donate 260 deer. Anyone, whether they are a hunter or not, can make a donation to the program.
