(KNZA)--It's official: former Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon is now a member of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office Leadership Team.
According to Sheriff Tim Morse, Calhoon joins the department as a Captain 3rd in command, whose primary role is oversight of the county jail. However, Morse says Calhoon will also hold other leadership responsibilities within the office.
Morse says Calhoon brings with him 28-years of law enforcement experience, a reputation for cost saving measures, and nationwide respect.
According to Morse, Calhoon will help to oversee the essential implementation of the prison rape elimination act policies, training and procedures, the new jail control center upgrade and improving overall jail operations and policies.
Additionally, Calhoon will help with this week's implementation of a new inmate automated commissary system, which is expected to increase revenues to the Sheriff's Office and reduce personnel workload, funded by the vendor and not the County taxpayers.
Calhoon is a past president of the Kansas Sheriff's Association, and is credited, along with service to numerous other boards and committees, for helping to oversee the construction of a new Atchison County Jail during his near 19-years in that office.
Calhoon sought another term to that role, but was defeated in November by challenger Jack Laurie.
