03/19/2013

( KNZA )--The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening accepted a bid as part of the 1st phase of improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system.

On the recommendation of Galen Lay with TREKK Design, the commission accepted the low bid submitted by Utility Solutions LLC of Basehor, with a base bid of $634,617.

The bid was accepted pending approval of the Kansas Department of Commerce and USDA Rural Development, which have provided funding for the project.

The bid was more than $300,000 under the engineer’s estimate.

Bids were received from two contractors on March 13th and were only about 31-hundred dollars apart.

The project will include the rehabilitation of nearly 12-thousand linear feet of sewer line, some manhole rehabilitation and replacement, along with six new manholes.

Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and groundwater from entering the city’s sewer system.
