Senate Committee Votes Favorably on Increasing NBAF Funding
Today began the first day of the veto session in the state legislature. Kansas Cattlemen's Association has been following the budget as it pertains to additional funding of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF). In a surprise hearing today, the ways and means committee addressed SB 245, a request for an additional $200 million in bonds to pay for the NBAF project. KCA has been supportive of bio-defense research but contends that building the facility in Kansas is a potential devastation to the cattle industry and the tens of thousands of producers who make their living in the state. The committee accepted written testimony and voted in favor of the bill with three amendments. With budget cuts across the board, KCA is disappointed with the committee's vote to spend more of Kansans' money on the project. However, KCA will continue to talk to legislators about the burden that this additional funding causes the state and its people.
