( KNZA )--After discussing the issue for the past few months, the Prairie Hills USD 113 Board of Education Monday evening unanimously approved moving from a block schedule to traditional schedule at the Sabetha High School and Sabetha Middle School beginning next school year.
The Sabetha schools have operated on block schedules for more than 15 years.
Under block scheduling, students usually attend four, 80- to 90-minute classes every other day, while under traditional scheduling students usually attend seven 40- to 50-minute classes each day.
Superintendent Dr. Bill Orth said the biggest reason for the change is financial, with less staff needed for a traditional schedule. He said it would allow them to move two teachers from the Sabetha Middle School to the Sabetha Elementary School. In addition, Orth said the district would be moving another teacher to Wetmore and the Bern pre-school, for a total savings of about $200,000.
Orth said it will put the Sabetha schools in line with the Wetmore and Axtell schools, which already operate on a traditional schedule.
