(KNZA)--New details emerge regarding the crimes of a Goff man, who took authorities on a wild ride last week.

It was Friday that 29-year-old Jonathon Watkins led local authorities on a brief, but highspeed chase, first in Hiawatha and then along U.S. Highway 36, through a construction zone, prior to being stopped and arrested.

Watkins was being transported, on a Missouri warrant, to the Brown County Jail when he managed to escape due to difficulty restraining him because of his broken arm.

Now details emerge regarding how the broken arm happened, with Watkins suffering the injury during a previous crime in Jackson County.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse, it happened April 23rd, in northwestern Jackson County, when Watkins allegedly attacked two family members, striking them repeatedly with a shovel and a skillet.

Deputies found the two bleeding and suffering from head injuries when they arrived in the area of 270th and B. Road, but Watkins had already fled.

He was located and arrested the next day on charges of aggravated battery and battery.

Morse says it was sometime during the incident involving the attack that Watkins broke his arm.

At the time of the Hiawatha incident, Watkins was free on a Jackson County bond of $25,000.

Meanwhile, formal charges are now filed against Watkins in Brown County in connection with the high speed pursuit that began when he allegedly stole a vehicle from behind the Hiawatha Post Office.

Making his first appearance in a Brown County courtroom Tuesday, Watkins is charged with four felony counts, including aggravated escape from custody, obstructing official duty, felony theft, and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 22nd.

Watkins remains in the Brown County Jail, held on bond of $15,000.
