(KAIR) -- A Leavenworth man will head to jury trial after pleading not guilty to charges related to an alleged kidnapping in Jefferson County.
Marcel Smith entered the plea Thursday in Jefferson County District Court to charges of kidnapping and aggravated battery.
A pre-trial conference has been set for September 26th and jury trial for October 16th.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office alleges Smith beat a woman at her Nortonville residence in late March, threw her in the trunk of a vehicle, and subsequently drove to Atchison.
Sheriff Jeff Herrig says the woman either eventually escaped or was let free by Smith or a third party so she could report to work.
He says the woman later arrived at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to report the incident with severe bruises over her entire body.
Smith was later apprehended by authorities in Atchison and returned to Jefferson County where he has remained in the Jefferson County Jail since on 250 thousand dollars bond.
