USD 113 Board Denies Bern Area Land Transfer Request
( KMZA )--The Prairie Hills USD 113 Board of Education has denied a land transfer request from a neighboring school district.
The board Monday evening considered a formal request from Nemaha Central USD 115 for property west of O Road.
A group of Bern area residents requested to have their land transferred out of USD 113 after the closing of the Bern school at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
More than seventy students left the district after the school closed, with many of them attending schools in the Nemaha Central School District at Seneca.
Following discussion, a motion by board member Jeff DeMint to accept the land transfer request failed on a 2-to-3 vote. Board member Brent Lortscher joined DeMint in supporting the motion, while Ed Reznicek, Cheryl Wenger and Mary Jane Ronnebaum voted no. Board member Julia Alfers abstained, while Tim Aberle was absent.
Lortscher said he believes patrons should be able to send their tax dollars where they are sending their children.
Other board members felt now wasn’t time to be making such a big decision and questioned whether it was in the district's best interest to approve the land transfer.
