DHHS Programs help Nebraskans with Fans, Energy Costs
06/14/2013

(KTNC) - The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has a couple programs available to help Nebraskans who need help staying cool this summer.
The state has partnered with organizations in 38 communities, including several in southeast Nebraska, to distribute fans to citizens.
Fans were purchased with funds from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
Fans are available locally through Southeast Nebraska Community Action offices in Falls City, Auburn, Pawnee City, Tecumseh, and Nebraska City.  Fans are also available from the Salvation Army in Beatrice and the Nebraska City Center for Children and Families.
Funds are also available through the DHHS cooling program to help low-income individuals and families pay energy costs.
To be eligible for funds, a person 70 years of age or older, or a person who is more susceptible to heat due to a medical condition must live in the household.  The limit of a household’s financial resources to qualify for the cooling program is $5,000, and annual income limits range from $12,960 for a single person to $54,302 for a household of 10.
Applications for cooling assistance can be requested online at Access Nebraska dot N-E dot gov. (
www.ACCESSNebraska.ne.gov), or by calling 1-800-383-4278.
Anyone seeking a fan should call the nearest participating organization for more information.
