Brown Co Plans to Seek Exemption from New Concealed Carry Law

Brown County Courthouse

( KNZA )--Brown County plans to seek a six-month exemption from a new state law that will allow permit holders to carry handguns in public buildings.

County Attorney Kevin Hill discussed with the county commission Monday the new state law that goes into effect July 1st.  The law requires local governments to allow concealed weapons in public buildings—including courthouses--unless they have an adequate plan for security at the buildings.

However, Hill says a letter may be sent to the Kansas Attorney General’s office requesting a six-month delay until January 1st until the ramifications of the law can be looked into.  He presented commissioners with a sample letter for their consideration.

It was decided that an exemption would be requested for all county owned buildings.  County Clerk Debbie Parker will prepare a letter for Commission Chairman Keith Olsen’s signature at next week’s meeting.

In other business, County Appraiser Paula Jones met with commissioners to request re-appointment to her position for a four-year term.  Jones also requested a $1 an hour raise in addition to any other employee raises.  She currently earns $43,640 a year.

The commission requested that Jones gather information from other counties as to comparable wages.
