( KNZA )--The Jackson County Commission are requesting a six-month exemption from a new state law that would allow permit holders to carry handguns inside county-owned buildings—including the Jackson County Courthouse—beginning July 1st.
The commission this week signed a letter that will be sent to the Kansas Attorney General’s office seeking an exemption until January 1st.
The new law that take effects July 1st requires local governments to allow concealed weapons in public buildings unless they have an adequate plan for security at the buildings. However, local governments can request a six-month exemption from the law.
Commissioners said they want to see what some of the surrounding counties plan to do before taking any action.
