Doniphan Co Request Exemption from Conceal Carry
06/25/2013

( KNZA )--The Doniphan County Commission is requesting a six-month exemption from a new state law that would allow permit holders to carry handguns inside county-owned buildings---including the Doniphan County Courthouse—beginning July 1st.

The commission Monday voted to send a letter to the Kansas Attorney General requesting an exemption until January 1st.

The law that takes effect July 1 allows people with concealed-carry permits to take weapons into public buildings unless the buildings have adequate security. The law gives cities and counties the right to exempt their buildings for six months.

In other business, the commission voted to pay Deputy County Appraiser Danielle Kiefer a salary of $1,000 per month, in addition to her regular pay, for assuming the duties of office manager until a permanent county appraiser is appointed, with the salary to begin July 1st.

The commission also voted to allow the appraiser’s office to advertise to fill a full-time vacant position, with the understanding if the deputy appraiser is not appointed county appraiser, the full-time position will terminate.

Longtime County Appraiser Dean Butrick is retiring July 1st after serving the county for 35 years.
