Topeka Woman Sentenced to Prison for Child Abuse in Johnson County Nebraska
(KLZA) 35 year old Jamie D. Russell Engstrom, of Topeka, appeared in the District Court of Johnson County, Nebraska, today for sentencing on a charge of Felony child abuse.
Engstrom was the passenger in a Ford Focus allegedly driven by her husband, Michael Engstrom also from Topeka, during a police pursuit on February 13, 2013 in which two state troopers and three employees of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were allegedly shot at. Michael Engstrom has been charged with nineteen felonies, including five counts of attempted murder in relation to the incident. He has pleaded not guilty, and his case is set for jury trial on September 9 in Tecumseh.
Jamie D. Russell Engstrom pleaded guilty to child abuse on April 15, for “knowingly, intentionally, or negligently causing or permitting a 14-year-old female [passenger] to be placed in a situation that endangered her life or physical or mental health.” The charge carried a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. Ms. Engstrom was sentenced to 5 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
Ms. Engstrom has been continuously incarcerated at the Johnson County Jail since February 13. According to Johnson County Attorney Julie D. Smith, today’s sentencing means that she will be transported to the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, Nebraska, to serve her prison sentence.
Both of the Engstroms are suspects in a double shooting in Topeka on February 13th that left one man dead and a woman wounded. In addition, they are facing charges in connection with a robbery of the Casey’s General Store in Pawnee City which also occurred February 13th.
