Explosive Chemical Found In Valley Falls School
08/16/2013

(KAIR)--Concerns regarding a possibly explosive chemical, discovered at the Valley Falls High School, sent emergency crews to the site Thursday afternoon.

WIBW is reporting that the chemical, identified as benzoyl peroxide, had likely been in the school since 1971. The container was discovered by a new chemistry teacher taking inventory of the lab.

Jefferson County Emergency Management was joined by the Topeka Police bomb squad, called to remove and dispose of the substance, as well as the Norton and Delaware fire departments, at the school.

The chemical was removed safely, with crews remaining at the scene for nearly 4 hours.

Valley Falls High School classes don’t start until next week, but freshman orientation, set to take place Thursday, was canceled.
