(KNZA)--A strong public outcry ends with Elwood city leaders backing down on original plans for a costly property tax hike.
The City's initial proposal would have raised the city rate almost 50 percent.
KQ2 News is reporting that new figures were revealed, and voted on, during a strongly attended Monday night City Council meeting.
The initial increase proposed would have raised the rates on a $100,000 home by about $140 a month, while the budget approved by the Council will increase taxes on the same home by about $40 monthly.
Mayor George Mitchell says it became apparent that the first proposal was simply too hefty of a pricetag, leading to the reevaluation which brought the cost down.
However, the lack of additional funding will mean the likelihood of budget cuts, with Mitchell saying everything but personnel will be on the table.
