( KNZA )--A Leavenworth man accused of stabbing his pregnant ex-girlfriend in June has pleaded “not guilty” to attempted murder charges
The Leavenworth Times reports 26-year-old Richard Bennett entered the plea Friday in Leavenworth County District Court to two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of criminal threat.
A jury trial was scheduled for November 4th.
Police say Bennett allegedly attacked his former girlfriend, Lachelle Kemp, with a knife outside a Leavenworth convenience store on June 18th.
He is also accused of making a criminal threat against Kemp.
Kemp says Bennett is the father of her unborn child.
Kemp testified during a preliminary hearing earlier this month that she suffered wounds to her abdomen, head and back. She said it appears her unborn child was not harmed.
Bennett also is facing a misdemeanor drug charge in an earlier case. A trial for the misdemeanor case was set for Oct. 10th.
