(KAIR)--The entire community of Atchison grieved in December of 2011 after police Sergeant David Enzbrenner was tragically cut down in the line of duty. Now, nearly two years after that tragic event, they are coming together to honor his memory, as well as help some deserving high school students. The Sgt. David Enzbrenner memorial 3.09 Run and 2K fun walk is set to take place Saturday morning. The Atchison County Sheriff's reserves initially started raising money in honor of Sgt. Enzbrenner with a poker run. However, Joe Weber, who was a friend of the late officer says they disbanded, and others stepped up to help Enzbrenner's wife collect money so that the scholarships she had started could continue to receive funds.
Robin Horton was also a friend of Enzbrenner as well as married to his cousin. She adds there is another special element to the race that further honors him. Since 5K is 3.1 miles so instead of calling it a 5K run, they are calling it a 3.09 run in honor of Enzbrenner's badge number, which was 309.
If you are interested in participating in this event, there is still time to register. There will be a registration booth at the Atchison YMCA Friday evening from 4:00-7:00. You can also register the morning of the race starting at 7:00. The race and the walk will start at 8:30 in front of the Atchison City Hall.
