Unemployment Down in Area NEK Counties

(MSC News)--Unemployment was down in August in area northeast Kansas counties with the exception of one.

The Kansas Department of Labor Friday released the August unemployment rates.

Pottawatomie County was the lone area county to see an increase in its jobless rate, climbing slightly to 5.8 percent.

Atchison County had the highest unemployment rate at 7.8 percent, while Nemaha County had the lowest at 3.7 percent.

Elsewhere, Leavenworth County’s jobless rate in August stood at 6.7 percent; Jefferson, 6.6 percent; Jackson, 6.5 percent; Doniphan, 6.4 percent; Brown, 5.1 percent; and Marshall at 4 percent.

Statewide, the unemployment rate remained steady at 5.9 percent in August. 
The unemployment rate has been below 6 percent since January 2012, dropping to as low as 5.5 percent from November 2012 through February 2013.
