(KNZA)-An unsafe building in Horton will be demolished.
Mayor Tim Lentz told the Brown County Commission Monday that a wall on the old Masonic Lodge building at 720 Central Avenue collapsed September 21st. Lentz said the city had a structural engineer look at the building and was told it needs to come down. He said the city has hired a St. Joseph company to demolish the building.
Commissioner Keith Olsen had offered to waive the fees for the collapsed building materials at the county transfer station and also offered for his district’s road crew to assist in hauling the materials. But Commissioner Warren Ploeger said he was against waiving the fees, noting it cost the county $35.25 a ton for material that goes through the transfer station.
Following discussion, the commission voted 3-0 to waive the fees for debris from the building that’s disposed of in the construction and demolition pit at the county landfill. In addition, the commission voted 2-1 to charge half price, or $22 a ton, for any material going through the transfer station. Commissioner Ploeger cast the lone no vote.
Olsen said the county, three townships and the Kickapoo Tribe will take the bricks from the building.
