(KAIR)--The USD 377 school district is sending a letter home to parents Tuesday warning them of a possible health risk to their children. They have at least one confirmed case of bacterial pneumonia. The letter states that it has been isolated to the pre school room in the central office, and the district has contacted the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and are following their recommendations to minimize any further risks. Hand washing and coughing etiquette has been reviewed and reinforced in each classroom, and the custodial staff is routinely cleaning all commonly touched areas. The drinking fountains in the pre school area will also not be utilized for the time being.
District Superintendent Steve Wiseman says the decision to send the letter was made so parents can be prepared to take the proper precautions to hopefully prevent their child from getting sick.
The letter sent to parents also warns them of the symptoms they could expect to see if their child does become ill. Symptoms include high fever, cough, fatigue, wheezing, and shortness of breath. The symptoms are similar to flu or cold like illnesses.
Wiseman says the district recommends that sick students stay out of school until they have been symptom free for at least twenty four hours without medication.
