10/09/2013

(KNZA)-- A grant will be sought for the purchase of forty-five new 800 megahertz radios for  emergency personnel and school districts in Brown County.

The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening gave Police Chief John Defore approval to seek a more than $87,000 grant through State Farm Insurance.

Defore said if awarded, the grant would be used to purchase thirty-seven mobile radios for emergency personnel in the county.  It would also be used to purchase 8 hand-held radios for  Hiawatha USD 415, Horton USD 430, Brown County Special Education Interlocal 615 and the Kickapoo Tribe.

Defore says the grant is competitive, but doesn’t require matching funds. The grant application is due October 31st and Defore says he should learn after the 1st of the year if its successful.

Following an executive session, the commission also gave Defore approval to hire a new police officer for $13.50 an hour to fill a vacancy.
