10/10/2013

(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Transportation issued a press release Thursday confirming that the second demolition blast of the former US 59 Amelia Earhart Bridge is still set to occur Friday afternoon at 2:00.

The 1,000 foot no man blast zone around the bridge has been reduced to 500 feet for the blast. Downtown Atchison streets within the blast area will be evacuated by 12:30 that afternoon. Those wishing to view the blast can do so in the same locations used for the first blast, Riverside or Veterans park. If you wish to view the demolition, KDOT is asking that you be in place no later than 1:30.

The new Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge will be closed to all traffic starting at 1:00 Friday afternoon, and will reopen no later than one and a half hours after the demolition.

This second blast will remove bridge pier 9 located in the Missouri River Channel on the Kansas side.
