(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has given the green light to a grant application for a street improvement project.
Following a hearing drawing no public comment, the commission during a special meeting Monday evening approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Crosby Gernon to sign a Community Development Block Grant application seeking $171,100 in funding for the improvement of Lodge Road. The city would match the grant dollar for dollar.
If awarded, the grant would be used to upgrade the west half of Lodge Road between 1st and Morrill Streets along with the valley gutter at Morrill Street.
The commission accepted a contract with Lawrence-based Governmental Assistance Services to serve as the grant administrator if the grant is awarded, contingent a review of the contract by the city attorney. The firm would charge of a maximum fee of $18,000.
The grant application is due October 31st, and the city should learn in January if it’s successful.
