Horton Commission Hears Plea To Fund Senior Center
10/22/2013

(KNZA)--A leaking roof at the Horton Senior Citizen's Center leads to a push from Brown County Commissioner Keith Olsen, seeking funding assistance of around $3,800 from the Horton City Commission.
Preliminary estimates for the cost of repairs is around $9,000 to $10,000.
Olsen made his plea, on behalf of his constituents, during Monday's meeting of the Commission.
However, concerns regarding the initiative were voiced by members of the Commission.
Jeremy Forkenbrock was joined by his fellow commissioners in the concern that providing funding to fix the roof would create a problematic precedent.
Because the downtown building is privately owned, the Commissioners questioned the use of taxpayer dollars for the repairs, saying that it would open the door to all businesses requesting similar funding assistance.
Ultimately, Olsen's request was turned down by the Commission, but he plans to continue working towards securing grants, and other funding sources, to see the roof repairs made.  One $5,000 dollar grant has already been applied for, but it won't be until sometime next month before it's known if approval is granted.
