(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission spent the majority of their meeting Monday evening trying to determine where the city is budget wise on the 1st phase of improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system.
Galen Lay with TREKK Design, the engineering firm hired for the project, met with the commission.
After deciding the city is still well under the $1.5 million budget, the commission approved having Lay proceed with preparing the plans and obtaining the necessary permits for the replacement of a sewer line underneath the railroad tracks between Delaware and Shawnee Streets at a cost of $26,265.
Lay said the line has collapsed. The total cost to replace the line has been estimated at nearly $152,000.
Lay said there are five places where sewer lines run under the railroad tracks. Lay suggested taking three of those sewer lines, located north of Oregon Street, and converting them into one crossing. The other two would be capped off. Commissioners were told that would save the city a considerable amount of money.
