Geese to be Addressed at Hiawatha City Lake
11/05/2013

(KNZA)--Steps will be taken to discourage the large number of geese from staying at the Hiawatha City Lake.
The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening gave Public Works Director Dave Grimm approval to discharge fireworks and shell crackers at the lake in an effort to force the geese to move on.
Grimm said the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism made the recommendation.  He said the same thing was done about 9 to 10 years ago and was very effective.
Grimm said residents will also be discouraged from feeding the geese at the lake.
He said he was approached by a neighboring property owner earlier this year asking that something be done about the geese after they migrated to his bean field, destroying about an acre of his crop twice
Grimm said elimination of the geese will also reduce the blue-green algae prevalent at the lake during the summer months.
