(KAIR)-Voters in Effingham USD 377 Tuesday soundly turned down a $17.5 million bond issue that would have funded the construction of a new preK-8th grade facility and upgrades to the junior/senior high school.
According to Atchison County Clerk Pauline Lee, the bond issue was defeated by a more than 360 vote margin. 930 votes were cast against the bond issue, with 566 votes cast in favor. Lee added that 49% of the district's registered voters turned out for the vote.
In recent weeks there have been groups canvassing for both sides, with each providing reasons why voters should vote with them. The vote yes for 377 committee held several informational breakfasts within the district to get information about the bond issue, and those who believed that the bond issue would not be beneficial to the district's residents responded with information of their own.
