(KAIR)--The upgrading and modernization of Atchison County's computer system has been a goal of the Atchison county commission for some time. Now, it looks like that goal will soon be accomplished.
Commission Chair Jeff Schuele says that the commission gave the go ahead during their meeting Tuesday for a computer company to upgrade the system. He said the total cost for upgrade, which will be spread out four years, is over $226,000. The upgrade will allow all 18 county departments to access the system.
Schuele says that since the old system is over seven years old, and a non-Windows based system, the change had to be made because as of April of next year, non-Windows based systems will not be supported.
Schuele said the decision to upgrade the system was not one that the commission took lightly, which is why it took them about several months to make a final decision. He said the commission spent that time speaking to other counties who had gone through a similar process to gather as much information as possible.
